Who was the hero who dragged the Turk into the abyss at the siege of Nándorfehérvár?

Well, of course, Titusz Dugovics! But the correct answer is more complicated. The figure of the hero who dragged the Turk with his flag into the abyss is a migratory motif in the history of several Central European countries. The story first appeared in Hungary 30 years after the battle of 1456, thanks to the chronicler Bonfini. What is more, at that time the hero did not even have a name, he only “”acquired”” one in 1824, thanks to an article by the royal councillor Gábor Döbrentei. Over the years, several historians have expressed doubts about the authenticity of Dugovics’s identity, and today it can be said that the true identity of Titusz Dugovics was different. This does not mean, however, that we shouldn’t admire the heroic Hungarian soldier who prevented the raising of the Turkish flag at the cost of his life.
