According to legends and chroniclers, Holubár was a red-bearded Czech warrior of giant stature whom no one could defeat. He also visited Buda, the court of Matthias Corvinus, to participate in a jousting tournament and collect the winner’s prize. At this point in the story there are several versions. Some say that Matthias secretly donned the knightly armour, others that he took on the Czech warrior by assuming his identity, but the end of the story is the same: the king defeated the feared warrior and rewarded him handsomely. Gyula Benczúr captured the decisive moment of the clash, where the straining body of the horse and the javelin breaking into pieces both added to the dramatic effect, while the story enhanced the glory of Matthias Corvinus.
