The otherwise edible gingerbread heart has as much tradition as it has a variety of fancy decorations. It was gifted clearly an expression of love, and it was a gift that was well worth returning. Braver lads handed them over in the front of the temple handed, which amounted to a proposal. They were often adorned with inscriptions and of course the inevitable mirror, in which the recipient could look at herself through the eyes of her beloved.
