There are several hypotheses as to what was the meaning of the pagan name of King Stephen I (Saint Stephen), Vajk. Some say it was a vernacular expression for butter, while others claim it was a nickname for the Turkish first name Baj or a form of the Turkish Bajik. Opinions are also divided on its meaning. The shorter version (Baj) means abundance and wealth, while Bajik means “righteous man”. It remains a mystery which version is correct. What is certain is that the painting of The Baptism of Stephen I (Vajk) brought fame and wealth to Gyula Benczúr (1844-1920), who became one of the most renowned painters not just in his country, but of his time.
