The story of Cupid and Psyche is one of the oldest known love stories. The popular part is clearly how the lovers met, but it was a difficult love, with many trials and tribulations – just like love is in real life. Psyche even had to descend to the Underworld to fetch a box for her future mother-in-law, Aphrodite. The curious Psyche opened the box, which contained poisonous vapour instead of cosmetics. Fortunately, the dazed Psyché, as depicted, was rescued by his lover, Cupid. (Francisco de Goya: Allegory of Love, Cupid, and Psyche)
