Women in the 19th century would probably give anything for a robotic machine instead of, say, churning butter by hand. The procedure was physically demanding and the work invested did not always bring the desired result. That is why countless superstitions have been linked to churning butter. They tried to guarantee good quality butter with herbs, a comb placed under the pot, and even a visit to the cross roads. All these preparations may seem ridiculous today, but what would a modern man do if he ever met the witch who turned butter into lemons? (Mihály Munkácsy: Woman at the Churn)
