Fruit – pomegranate

Food still lifes offer excellent opportunities for a little stomach churning and to learn about the eating habits of the old era. It was not by chance that Juan de Zurbarán painted pomegranates next to his basket of apples. This fruit, exotic to us, was common in Spain at the old time.
And while we admire the professional knowledge of the painter, we can think about how strange the human mind is; the grenades used in wars were named after the French name (grenade) for the pomegranate, which is also considered a symbol of fertility.
