From child prodigy to abbot

The career of Ferenc Liszt (1811-1886) was not only marked by wonderful music pieces and superb piano playing, but also by twists and turns that would even make soap operas blush. These include the fact that, by the time he was finally to marry the love of his life, Princess Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, he had decided to become a priest. The princess, who was also deeply religious, supported his decision, so Liszt took the four lower holy orders in 1865, and from then on, he was titled an abbot and was allowed to wear an abbot’s gown, just like Mihály Munkácsy portrayed him in 1886.
