It is not surprising that fishing is the dominant industry in Spain, which is spread between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The country produces more than 1 million tons of fish products every year, making it the largest fish producer in the European Union. However, the fishing carried out is mostly in national, but also in international waters, still takes place in small-scale conditions, with small boats of less than 12 meters in length and thousands of fishermen.
However, Spain is not only the EU’s largest fish producer, but also one of its largest consumers. Although the most famous dish is paella (a dish made of scallops mixed with rice), Spanish menus abound in fish soups, salads and, of course, fried dishes.
