There is a say ‘where is last year’s snow’, but when it comes to quality works of art, the answer is easy: in the auction houses. Speaking of the great Spanish masters of the 16-17th century, it is clear that they do not disappoint the auctioneers. A painting by Diego Velázquez sold for $16.9 million at Sotheby’s in 2007, while a work by El Greco fetched just under $14 million, also at Sotheby’s in 2013. Compared to these figures, the generous 4.3 million dollars paid for a work by Bartolomé Estebán Murillo in 2005 may seem like a trifle, but it is worth considering that even without taking into account exchange rate drops and inflation, this amounts to almost HUF 1.5 billion.
