One of the most famous paintings by Diego Velázquez (1599-1660) is the Infanta Margarita Teresa. The aim of the painting was to find a husband for Margarita Teresa, who was only 10 years old at the time of the painting. Whether it was the images that did the trick, or the fact that she was fathered by the King of Spain, the ruler of one of the greatest empires of the time, is unclear. In any case, in 1666 – as arranged – she became the wife of Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, and hence, the Queen of Hungary. And what did the title Infanta refer to? This title is derived from the word infante, meaning child, and was applied to royal children, and was first used at the Portuguese imperial court. (Diego Velázquez: Infanta Margarita Teresa)
