A life-changing mission

The adoption of Christianity marked a turning point in the history of Hungary. The decision itself was not a simple one, nor did it automatically lead to the country becoming Christian, as it needed the Pope’s blessing. King Stephen I, also known as King Saint Stephen (975-1038), sent his adviser, Abbot Astrik, to conduct talks with Pope Sylvester II. Astrik must have fulfilled the mission in 999 well, because he returned to Stephen, with the Pope’s blessing, the crown he had requested, and royal rights, which led to Stephen being crowned a Christian king. In this way, King Stephen changed the fate not only of his own nation, but of an entire nation. (Vilmos Aba Novák: Pope Sylvester II and Astrik)
