A decision that determined the fate of a nation

The Christianization of Hungary is inseparable from King Stephen I, but none of this could have happened if the pagan son of the pagan Duke Géza, Vajk, had not converted to Christianity and become the later King Stephen I. There is no doubt about the significance of the moment; it was no accident that Gyula Benczúr (1844-1920) decided to portray this historic moment. Benczúr submitted his work to the competition for historical paintings in 1869, which he won. This marked not only the birth of an outstanding painting, but also the rise of Gyula Benczúr, the “”star”” painter of the time. (Gyula Benczúr: The baptism of Stephen I / Vajk)
